these are chalky and definitely create alot of dust pile up. then i take the dust while its still on the paper and use my fingers to swirl it around even more, making sure as much as possible gets pushed into the paper. since these are so dusty, i wouldnt use them for details. but they are great for large background areas and large areas to be filled in with color.

when using chalky pastels, remember, you can still see the paper underneath the color you put down.

in my opinion, these are very dusty and still alot of waste, but, every product has its qualities about them. im not sure about their lightfastness or fading? i did not read the pamphlet that came with the package.

for artwork, i first use pastel pencils by mungyo and those are lightfast, and then the background i put the martin pastels.

I don't recommend these pastels to anyone, unless you are going to use them to paint your sidewalk. They come in a wide variety of colors, but they are so hard, it almost felt like I was drawing with a piece of rock. I guess I have been spoiled by using other brands of really soft pastels, such as Sennelier or Schmincke.

I ended up giving away these hard pastels, box and everything, to my 6-year-old niece.
