My mom was too poor to buy me awesome name brand crayons like all the other kids had when I was little. Now that im all grown up and dont have to steal the worn out ones from Pizza Hut I bought my very own box. Its a little harder to stay in between the lines with your pinky up due to the fancyness of these Crayolas but im hoping my skills will improve with time.

PS. there arent even 24 colors in the rainbow! Crayola has done it again with their wizardry.

My box did arrive with a few broken tips from shipping so it may be better to buy local.

I'm a graduate student who spends a lot of time reading technical articles. I like to print on both sides of the page to save paper, and hate it when highlighters bleed through. I've found that these crayons present a simple, affordable, and just plain happy solution to this problem. I keep this box of crayons in my purse and a larger box on my desk. They're wonderful for highlighting the closely spaced type in scientific journals, knocking out some quick diagrams while developing a new algorithm, and stress relief. I love these crayons, and recommend them for scientists of all ages :)

There are numerous "stain tips" offered up on the Internet just in case you are worried about your youngster coloring everything in sight.

You can use this box of 24 colors of crayons, which are incredibly inexpensive to make batik. Yes! You can make a beautiful textile design using crayons.

You'll need:

1 cheap 24 well muffin tin (yard sale!)

several boxes of these crayons

100% Cotton fabric (white is best)

Black Spray Fabric Dye

Some cheapo paintbrushes

Aluminum foil

Newspaper

An iron

old sheets and plastic garbage bags

To make this gorgeous batik, peel and break up your crayons by color and put them into the muffin wells. Heat at 275 degrees in your oven to melt them. Meanwhile, place your fabric on aluminum foil on your counter. If you want to clean your brushes, have a small mug of boiling hot water (a mug you don't want anymore) and if you want to keep your crayons melted, you can put them on a hot plate or just put back into the oven every five minutes to keep them liquid. Start painting a colorful design. (Flowers and birds are easy and beautiful. Fruits and berries are also beautiful, along with tropical looking leaves.)

Once you painted up your entire fabric (you can leave a border), let the wax harden. Meanwhile, you can discard the cheapo brushes. The crayons in the muffin tin can be left to harden for another painting session another day. When the fabric is cooled and hard, crumple it up into a ball to crack the wax.

Now you are ready to dye the background to get that stained-glass effect of batik. Protect your counter with plastic garbage bags, lay on the flattened wax painted fabric and spray with black fabric dye. Blot the excess dye with paper towels and let your fabric creation dry over night.

Now, you are going to remove the excess wax with the iron. Sandwich the fabric between layers of newspaper. I'd protect my counter or ironing board with several old sheets and iron out the wax, changing the newspaper as it gets soaked with wax. This will take time. When you are finished, you can sew fabric on as a border, or turn under the fabric edges to make an inlay for a bag or a quilt. This is a fun project with kids. The more naive the art, the better the result, so this is one of those projects where drawing ability is less important than color placement and shapes. Bold shapes and color contrasts work well!

This is the first year we were required by the school district to buy the 24 package of crayons for the students. Honestly, I've tried all those offbeat brands and nothing works like Crayola. I even buy these for the Shoeboxes that we send overseas with Franklin Graham's ministry. They hold up better, don't flake all over the place, the kid's clothes, etc., and the children just prefer the colors of these compared to the knock-offs. Kudos to Crayola they've been making the best for years and no one has ever figured out how to make them better, because you can't! Highly recommend!
