I have been crocheting for 23 years and for the most part I have used steel hooks. Unfortunately I do travel quite a bit and I needed hooks to take on the plane, these were the obvious choice. The first thing that I have noticed is there the plastic tends to have an edge. It's easily filed down with a fingernail file, but it's there none the less. It's not overly comfortable to use and the smaller hooks (Primarily G) aren't that firm with rough usage. I tend to make crochet toys and amigurumi which requires a nice tight stitch, and these just don't cut it. I could never get the stitches tight enough without fear of breaking the hook.
Now, that being said. These would be GREAT for kids who are just learning to crochet. They have bright and attractive colors that can definitely keep ones interest while trying to teach them something that can be tedious otherwise :) They are also relatively inexpensive compared to steel hook kits.

If you asked me would I like using a plastic hook that reminds me of bak-e-lite I'd have laughed. I'm so used to metal hooks, 40 years of working with metal. And Susan Bates metal ones are particularly nice. But I was in the craft store and I saw these ( I've ordered again here) so I thought I'd get this set in CASE I had trouble locating a hook. I am returning to crochet a shawl, hat and other items in a period of recovery from health issues. I needed a distraction. I really am impressed with this hook. This is the H one I'm using. It does not have an irritating plastic edge, none seem to, I saw that on a review perhaps they addressed that issue. It's extremely smooth. For me the weight is "just right". I don't like hooks with big bulbous heads or this nob up at the tip. It's my own issue but that catches for me in the flow of my rhythm. This is just lovely. Not once has it caught. It's been a fantastic hook for making a great item. I have now ordered a second set here. I will swear by these for awhile.
I do think for a beginner this is a lovely tool, I never thought about it but it is a good idea to have the plastic on public transportation. I notice one thing for sure. I haven't dropped it as much when I've sat down my work. It has had less of a tendency to slip and fall away. Maybe just coincidence, maybe it's a bit lighter and maybe the metal slides faster-not sure. And funny but I notice in low light, I often crochet in the evening in low light so family can watch TV the needle picks up light, being clear plastic. It helps me see. I really think a light up one would be cool...
This is so inane but the hook I'm using is clear and red. There is something rather enchanting about it, it's a bit pretty to my eye as I use it. I really enjoy that.
I like this enough as a 40 year crocheter to recommend it.

At first I thought that these were just some novelty items because of the color. However I am currently using the "G" hook to do a project with a book I brought from Amazon:Positively Crochet! as a matter of fact, I bought the yarn here too!! Beadnik-Black Beret I am happy to say that the project is going well, the needles are sturdy and they feel good in my hand. I have a tendency to make my stitches tight ( I guess because I am a begginer), but the needle fits easily through my stiches. The colors are vibrant, so if you are trying to get a small child interested in crochet, this might be a good choice. One tiny drawback is that the needle size printed on the needle itself is hard to see. The needles are see through plastic and combined with the colors make reading the etching on the side difficult. The sizes are on the outside of the pouch though.

I have so many crochet hook's & sets, some expensive ones. I was using a Crochet Dude w/silky twist to make a shawl & it was torture!!! Thought I'd try just about anything so I wouldn't have to scrap the project because it's so pretty. I came home w/my (chuckle, chuckle!!) plastic kiddie hook & this thing is WONDERFUL!!! Glides through the stitches!!! Will buy both sets.

I bought this item for a friend who lives in another state and LOVES to crochet but didn't have access to obtaining hooks. I let her pick out what she wanted herself and then ordered for her as I know practically nothing about crocheting. She loved them at first but after continuous use the hook part completely broke off on at least one of them and thus no longer usable.
