The quality seems good to me, though I haven't used anything else to compare with. I haven't tried 'painting' with it, but have used it to make shadows on art pieces I've made. I ordered the earth-colors set but would recommend getting a set of lighter pastels with it for more variety. Your painting/collage should be sealed after using it. I think a painter could have a lot of fun with the pan pastels because they are brushed on, rather than drawing with a hand held piece, They are available in individual canisters, too. I definitely love this product.

Nice to find things at a reasonable price. Have looked all over for the pan pastels that weren't too expensive
