The are soft, very soft. I can get some good blacks out of them. My only gripe is that every now and then (like most other pencils I've tired) you get what I call a grain of sand in the lead. I've scratched my drawing paper by accident before and had permanent dark lines. That said, most pencils I've tried suffer from that problem. Only mechanical or high polymer leads are truly smooth.

These pencils are the best to sketch ideas, I got them and now I want another box, I'm actually thinking about to buy the color ones too.
