I bought this set of circular needles as a backup to my metal set, because sometimes my daughter is using just the size I need.
These needles are bamboo. Like other bamboo needles, they work best with slippery yarns (where a metal needle would slide out too easily), not so well with yarn that grabs, e.g., pure wool. The advantage of bamboo is that it's more likely to be allowed on an airplane than metal needles, especially straight needles.
The joins (where the cable joins the needle tips) are extremely smooth. Having used the needles for several months, I've not had the yarn (even wool) snag on the join even once. The cable itself is a little "grabby," so this is not a good choice if you knit very tightly, however, the cable is an absolute dream in that it has no memory whatsoever, so it will not coil up on you while you're knitting. It just lies there like a wet noodle. The points are reasonably sharp, so you could certainly use these needles for lace.
The selection of sizes is terrific, U.S. 0-15, and the 32" cable is long enough to do magic loop knitting. My only negative experience with the needles is that one of the tips of the size 0 needle broke in half while I was knitting a pair of socks, so you do have to be mindful of how much pressure you're putting on this thin bit of wood. Fortunately, I was able to sand the remaining tip to a point and go right on knitting. I've had no similar problem with any of the thicker needles in the set. Each needle is stamped with its size and comes in a plastic bag.
This set of needles would be an excellent choice for anyone who needs a backup set or a newer knitter who might not be ready to invest in the more expensive interchangeable circular needle sets.
Fast forward 3 years: The needles have held up beautifully, so I upgraded my rating from 4 to 5 stars. When I'm being especially hard on my needles, the bending and twisting movement where cord joins tip has twice cracked the cord. When that happened, I simply pulled off the plastic clinging to the bamboo, put a dab of superglue on the bamboo nub, and shoved the end of the tubing back on. This is still the best bang for the buck I've seen in fixed circs.

I love these! They are very very smooth, the cords don't have memory, so they won't be curling or getting in the way which always bugged me with the metal ones. The joints are also very smooth so the yarn doesn't get caught in them. I'm really happy with my purchase and for the price it's a steal!
