This is a wonderful calligraphy set. The dip pen has a gold-plated nib, which is perfect for acidic inks like iron gall and black walnut inks (the gold-plating helps prevent the pen from tarnishing). The nib is pointed (and NOT a broad-edge italic nib) and fairly stiff (possibly not meant for flexing... it is the gold-plated version of their #513 Bowl-Pointed Globe EF-nib). The nib is smooth and not scratchy like a crowquill. The nib is also easy to remove from this holder. The pen holder is lightweight and comfortable to write with. I love the marbling pattern-so many pen holders are ho-hum by comparison. The gold and silver acrylic inks flow nicely with this dip pen and look fantastic on black paper. My only criticism is that the bottles of ink are so small. I'd like to see Speedball make these gold-plated nibs more widely available. They're really nice. Non-calligraphers will find this dip pen useful for writing that special letter by hand, too.

For those of you looking for a dip pen, I can say that this one is very pleasant to write with for the price it is offered at. The pen is quite long and is comfortably wide. Its black color with golden swirls and sheen make it distinctly attractive considering that for an equal price you could buy a cheap quill that will fall apart on you after a week.

The nib coming with the pen is adequate, but I find that the well might not be the best design to retain ink. All that means is you might have to dip for ink a tiny bit more, so if you have other nibs that can fit, you might prefer those.

The gold and silver inks in the pack are great. I have had difficulty using metallic inks before but these mix well and spread easily and show up on the paper.
