The produce components are very good (I'd expect nothing less from this manufacturer). I purchased this item to take to a workshop. I found the individual components were each of high quality. But, the packaging is pretty cheap looking. Since it's not meant to be permanent packaging, it's not a big deal, but if this was a gift, I'd prefer to take it out of the box and present as individual peices. Nothing jumps out as amazing except they are all definate staples that are much bettter than the cheaper similar options. The price paid buying them together makes it worthwhile for someone who actually does or wants to learn calligraphy/writing. THese aren't show peices, rather they are peices to be used. This is a set to buy somone who will use this item (and doesn't feel like they need a case). I will say, that it is more than total utility, though. Each item has a simplicity and a level of quality that is very japanese. It's beautiful because it's so simple and so 'polished' without being too loud.
