Based on the negative reviews here I was hesitant that this product could be used to make mini books with a custom binding until I found a great tutorial on You Tube. The Irreverent Crafter (Kerri) demos a custom binding technique using paper for the pages and cover of the book. The title of the video is "yourstorycustom" by kerri9494. This is a good solution for me because I don't want to have to purchase a lot of extra items like chipboard, "O" rings, binder rings etc. to make a custom book. I like the simplicity of just paper. Updated: I did go ahead and purchase this product and I've given it a trial run with the binder and pages that came in the box. The binding feature works great using their binder. They give you a set of scrapbook pages that are pre-designed for photos and places for journaling. Not the best paper designs in the world but not bad. The paper had a glossy finish and it was fairly light weight, lighter than card stock but slightly heavier than designer paper. I don't know what the exact weight of the paper is but I think for you to have success with this product the paper weight is key. The weight they provide is sturdy enough to hold your photos and light enough to allow the binder to open up flat when you turn the pages. For this reason, I think this is a super solution especially if you are a digital scrapbook artist. I did another trial run with the binding feature using one of their album covers to bind a stack of pages together using Basic Gray paper that was fairly heavy, more of a card stock weight. I found that I had to go through the binding process twice. Once alone wasn't enough so some of the pages fell out when I tried to flip through the pages one at a time. As a result, when I went through the binding process a second time, not all the pages were layered on top of one another with their edges even. However, after the second binding, all the pages did successfully stay adhered to the spine of the album. When flipping through the pages, they didn't wan't to lay flat as you flip through the pages of the album using this paper weight. The pages sort of just bend back but never lie flat. I suppose you could run the edges of the paper that will lie in the spine through a paper crimper, that might help them lie down flat after binding. Just another suggestion, if you are planning on making pockets for some of your pages, or adding any extra layers of paper for embellishments, make sure you take into account the section of the page that will rest in the spine. In other words, when making your layout design, keep the section of the page that will be covered by the spine blank. Also, if you use their binder, the more pages you want in the album, the thinner the paper needs to be (but not too thin if you plan to add photos otherwise the paper will buckle under the weight of the photos). Also if using their album, the more items you add to your pages to embellish them, the fewer pages will fit into the album, another thing to keep in mind. Rub on style embellishments seems to be your best bet as they lie flat. However you could probably decorate the cover with chipboard type embellishments, ribbon, etc. I wouldn't rely on this machine to make a full scrapbook album using their album covers, its not a substitute for a full size album because it simply cannot hold more than a dozen pages with photos. If you use their album covers, I think it would be a nice product to make albums with 6-12 pages as "gifts" or as keepsakes for a special occasion etc. Its very quick and easy so if you need something that doesn't require a huge investment in time to create, it scores very high on convenience.

I have used this to gather up photos and paper stuff that I want to keep. I hated the idea of trying to decide what to do with all the nice little paper memories I cherish. This machine helps you make little books out of awards, drawings, vacation pamplets and photos and lovely little cards. I was excited at first to have the machine, thinking this is a great having a binder and laminator machine all in one. but got disappointed after, i pretty much agree from those who says you cannot use other binder other than the company's which is expensive. And also when i warm up the machine it emits a burning plastic smell. The overall look of the machine is nice, not heavy. I thought I would be able to do so much more with this product, turns out, I cannot.If you buy YourStory's products, binders and laminators, then it works the way it was intended. If you try to make your own covers/binders, then they must be pretty thick (like the ones you have to buy) or it won't bind very well, or poorly. I guess I'm happy I bought this at half price because all its good for is laminating. My kitchen sealer works better at binding.

As pretty much every review below has noted, the main knock on the YourStory machine is not the machine itself. The main knock is that the product range is very limited. It only works with their brand of covers. However, thermobinding.com has developed an adaptor which allows you to use UniBind products with the YourStory machine. This really opens up a whole new world of soft and hard covers. You can find more info about the adaptor on their website under the "resources" menu on the left hand side.I think that owners of this machine will find this very helpful.
