The starter kits Speedball produces have all you need to screen print things fairly easily. The instructions are simple (too simple) and all the products are work-horse quality, meaning that they are not fancy and may take some adaptation but function as they should. This kit gets 3 stars because I recieved both the original kit and the replacement kit damaged due to very poor packaging on Speddball's part. The first kit had the photo-sensatizer (which is needed to make the emulsion 'cook' when exposed to light, allowing you to create a stencil) open and both dry and spilled down its side. One of the inks had cracked and started to leak but that was minor. The worst of it was that the screen filler jar was open and spilled over everything (including the screen) esesntially making the kit useless. The second kit had minor issues with the sensatizer (which I decided not to use since I ordered a separate emulsion kit anyway) and the paintbrush had its cover put on wrong, pinning about a fifth of the bristles to the side of the handle. I found this to be good enough and have overall enjoyed using the kit. the polyester in the screen is kind of cheap though, and if not taken care of extremely well it will start to haze up and will take on a bit of the ink each printing uses, leaving shadow images in the screen. The screen is also starting to sag after only 5 prints or so, and will have to be tightened soon. I wouldn't start a business with this, but for teaching the basics it works well, if you get it without damage.

I purchased this kit because I really wanted to get into screen printing and this was the cheapest way to start. For the price it was a good deal in my opinion. When it arrived 2 days later which seemed incredibly fast for free shipping I was very happy. When I open the box everything seemed to be intact, except the screen filler. Part of it had opened up and went on the screen and several pages of the instruction booklet. It only got a portion of the screen so it wasn't too bad. It does not come with transparency but you could get those printed at Kinko's for really cheap. When using the inks you must work pretty quickly because unless you don't it will dry up and clog up your screen, which I found out that dish washing soap works pretty well in getting that out. The squeegee was ok I can work with it. And if anyone is wondering the sensitizer is a paste, but its not going anywhere till you add the water and Shake Vigorously! I found that using a straightened out paper clip helps to get it out from the bottom.

Overall I think it was a good deal for the price and I'm happy with the outcome of the products that I produced with it:

But they should but more time into making sure their product is packaged correctly.

I bought this just to run some shirts for friends band. It is just basics to start or run small production line. Screen clogged often so had to rinse about every 5-7 shirts. Some other items will be needed so don't expect to start printing right out of the box.

If you are new to screen printing this kit is a great way to get all the basic supplies you'll need to start. The only additional supplies that would be a good idea is a 9 x 13 (approx) sheet of glass and a BBA No 1 photoflood or clear 150 watt ican decent bulb (but you can use the sun if you don't want to buy a bulb and fixture). If you don't think you'll be good at holding the frame in place with one hand and pulling the squeegee with another then you'll also need a friend to help for a few seconds when you make the print. I was able to make a professional quality print by myself just by holding the frame in place on a t-shirt.

I suggest starting out with trying the positive screen filler method using the drawing fluid. The kit instructions say that it's easier to use a the stencil method first but I don't think anyone who is good at design will be satisfied with the stencil method (either too basic or too much time involved in trying to cut out more detailed stencils) and should just draw their design onto the screen with the drawing fluid (you can use a pencil first).
