I have been doing Needle tatting for many years and have taught many of my friends to tat with these needles. I was unable to find anyone who tatted with a shuttle when I wanted to learn but I went to a quilt show and watched a lady needle tatting. Just by watching her, I was able to pick up a needle and some of the thread and started tatting, within just 5 minutes I had it and was off and running. I was told at one time "You can't do needle tatting as small as with a shuttle", I can and have made a round with silk sewing thread with a regular size 10 sewing needle, the 'round' was smaller then a dime. I have made doll clothes and added beautiful lines to my crazy quilt blocks and made vests and baby blankets/throws with yarn size needles. I might add its easy for either left handed or right handed Crafter's. The only down side to doing needle tatting is finding the needles in a store near you.

I taught myself needle-tatting about 12 years ago. Although I took lessons in knitting and crocheting, I'm not good at either, especially with my extremely arthritic hands. Needle-tatting is "just what the doctor ordered" if your hands don't work really well but you still want to make something beautiful with your hands. I agree that it's too bad that stores don't sell either the needles or the fine crochet and tatting threads and one must buy them online. The books sold here are the very ones I have and use and are the most useful ones for either a beginner or an experienced tatter.
