I bought these chalks last year when I need to replace my chalks from Artist Affordable. I teach school so I used my pastels to write on the board and chalk visuals. You will find they color smoothly and are easy to rub in without leaving your visual looking fuzzy. The colors are bright and easy to work with. They are great for shading because there are so many colors. This is the best set of chalks that I have ever owned. I would recommend them to all my teacher friends.

In looking for a wide variety of colors, I chose this set of Faber Castell Gold Faber Studio Box of 48 because of its range and value for the price. As a semi-professional artist, my venture into soft pastels began with another brand. Faber Castell offers many in-between shades that I didn't have in my collection. I like to try many colors and hues because in art I love having options available to me! A set of smaller sticks lets me sample and use a color for a project and then decide if I like it enough to continue using the particular color. For instance, there is an olive/cement color that was a perfect complement to my other colors--not too olive, nor too gray, it just fit my requirements. The quality of this set was satisfactory for me and the sticks weren't crumbly like some others. I use this product in combination with another product I reviewed, "Acrylic Ground for Pastels" (see my review on this product, too).

I'm a pastel junkie and a professional artist. I didn't know that they would be so tiny, but the price is reasonable. They perform like hard pastels or chalk pastels. The 48 colors are bright and are great for beginners. I already own expensive pastel sets and I needed a less expensive brand to practice rough sketches or linear work. I would've love to see them longer like traditional pastels, but Faber Castell's Soft Pastel Set is fun to experiment with!

These aren't exactly top of the line but they work pretty well as far as soft pastels go. I would buy them again.
