Chinese paint is traditionally mineral based. The brilliance is astounding and I've found rather stunning compared to my school-days lacklustre water colours.

One relief is the manufacturers no longer use lead tainted metal tubes but have replaced them with plastic tubes.

Furthermore, some of the colours in their original mineral form which are highly toxic eg Phythalocyanine, Cinnabar, Vermilion, Gamboge, Blue or Green etc for consumer safety, you will now find the word "(Hue)" suffixed to the colour name that simply means that it is substituted with a safer alternative concoction.

A reliable and affordable brand for the student and amateur. Very happy.

List of the 12 colours are:

1. Black

2. Indigo

3. Phthalocyanine

4. Green Label 3

5. Burnt Sienna

6. Carmine

7. Rouge

8. Cinnabar

9. Vermillion

10.Gamboge

11.Blue Hue

12.Titanium White

Also available in 18 and 24 colours or purchased in 5 tube boxes of the one colour.

Marie's paints are designed for rice paper, not Western watercolor paper. Marie's paints become permanent and will not bleed when the rice paper is later rewet in the mounting process. Western watercolors will bleed when rewet. Bottom line: Eastern Paints for Eastern paper, brushes, ink & mounting techniques; Western Paints for Western paper, brushes and mounting techniques. What I don't like about Marie's paints is that they must be purchased by the set and one cannot replace individual tubes.

Although the paintings are very small, just a drop makes a large amount when you add water. Excellent quality!

The paints are lovely. Very satisfied. I am just learning to paint in the Chinese manner and am so glad to now have the paints to try.

It's not a watercolour. It's a chinese painting, then you will have a painting opaque. It is also not as opaque as the gouache. Thus, these inks are excellent effects "alla prima" in paint, but it can be used with watercolor technique too, but with somewhat different results.
