I have been working with Spencerian, engrossers and copperplate script for years and like everyone else, started out with this super cheap and widely available set. I can see why it is so appealing, the low price and availability appealed to me, too. But it was completely discouraging for a beginner. The nibs, though they do work, are very poor quality and impossible to get a fine quality line out of them. The plastic holder is rudimentary at best, you might as well use a etch a sketch and call it a computer. It isn't even set correctly. The flange (the part that sticks out of the holder) should be made out of metal (all other professional holders are made of metal) so it can be adjusted to fit your style. These ones are made of plastic and cannot be adjusted, so you are stuck using an awkward position. The whole shebang creates an awkward experience for novices and may discourage them, as it did me. I was so frustrated and put away the set for years, before buying professional nibs and holders separately (these do not cost that much more from this set). Please save your money and buy professional quality tools if you are starting out, as these will either frustrate you or keep you content making mediocre work.

Great for practice! No need to adjust anything, holder was well made, just remove coating off the nibs and write away!

The best thing about this pen is that it is exactly what it say. I'm learning to do the Copperplate lettering , and its the best I've tried.

Anyone learning or doing copperplate or Spencerian calligraphy

should get the Brause 66EF nibs:

Speedball nibs don't have the fine hairlines needed, and their

writing looks heavy handed.
