I received this mat yesterday and when I took a close look at it, noticed the sticker saying "This product contains chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer, birth defects, and/or reproductive harm". I have no idea what they're referring to, and as the other reviewer stated, the mat has a really strong rubbery/chemical smell. The smell alone turns me off.

***I came back to edit my review. I called the company and asked them about the sticker, and they explained that the sticker was added to ALL Fiskars products once Prop 65 passed in CA. Until they were able to chemically analyze all of their products, the sticker was introduced to comply with the proposition, in case they were to find any carcinogenic components in their products. They assured me that all of their products passed the necessary tests and were found to have NO carcinogenic materials in them, and that many products being sold today still have that sticker on them. I can't verify their statements, but the customer service representative said that it is a common question and that Fiskars realizes the concern the stickers can cause.

So I've been using my mat, and I love it. It's great and the rubbery smell went away in a day or so once it was placed on a table.

This is my new favorite thing for crafting! The board is much thinner then I expected but works so well! I've been using it for a few months now and there is no evidence of scratches or marks from my rotary cutter or scissors!

This mat is incredible. It has held up to my rotary cutting without a blemish yet. The size is fantastic, and I'm thrilled that it's double-sided for twice the life. That dreaded self-healing rotary mat odor wears off quickly, which is better than some other brands that linger much longer. The angled markings are also great, particularly for bias cutting or other quilt peice shapes. This mat is just so great, and an incredible upgrade for anyone struggling to make a smaller mat work.

I had several of these cutting boards over the past few years. They wore out VERY quickly and if you read the fine print you find out why... they state they are for "rotary cutters only". Using craft knives on them destroys them in short order.

Not so with the Alvin boards. MUCH, MUCH better quality and so much more durable you will not believe the difference. You will go through a dozen Fiskars boards before needing to replace the Alvin, it is that large a difference when using craft knives.

This cutting mat is one of the best I have used. It does have a smell but that will dissipate with time I did not have any issues with the product it self. The one issue I did have was that is was shipped rolled up. That meant that I had to lay it out in the sun to warm and flatten. I can't tell you how annoying this was. After I received it I happened to look at my local Wal-mart and for the same price I could have bought one that was flat. It only took two days for it to flatten back out but Amazon really needs to learn not to bend these when shipping.
