I haven't ordered this tool but I recognize it from the picture. It's a basic woodcraft burning tool like millions of Boy Scouts have used and it's true that it will melt/burn right thru your encaustic painting. A better option is to go to a good sewing store and ask for the quilt/tacking iron. It'll run $50 but it is a miniature iron shape on a long handle and has temperature control. If you already have a woodburning tool or a soldering iron you can go to a tool place and ask for a regulator. That's probably $50 or more, but is essential so you don't burn yourself or your studio up.

I have this encaustic hot pen and have used it successfully and happily. Of course, I use it with a heat regulator (as directed) which gives the ability to dial up or down on the heat control. Used the proper way, I think it a very useful device.
Directions:
"Like all wood burning type tools this tool MUST be used with a temperature regulator for encaustic painting. When plugged directly into the wall it will get hot enough to burn through woodand it will also be hot enough to burn the beeswax in your encaustic paints."

I've reviewed Encaustikos products previously. And I love the company and their products though I believe that they are looking to find solutions where no new solutions are needed. This pen set does have tips and a heat regulator and you'll find the appropriate temperatures for working with wax. The problem is that this is a modified wood burning set. My friends remind me that we're supposed to be guerrilla artists. I tell'm that I'm old. There are hot wax tools with some greater flexibility. High on my personal list is a great calligraphic/drawing tip which you dip into the wax and the well can be drawn with. I was excited about the calligraphic tip with reservoir but oopsie it doesn't fit. Nor did the other tips I purchased. So now one more item in the give-to-the-god-son box for him to use to write his name on the legs of his parents prairie style vintage furniture. But Encaustikos probably in attempt to meet the cost demands of artists, put together this guerrilla solution. I am usually about the clown car and not the Cadillac. I'm all about house paint and gasoline an scrap wood. But I am more interested in the making art and asking my own questions rather than fighting or working around tools. Keep looking through the Encaustikos products that are marvelous. But pass on this burner. Look for the competition and don't forget the tip with the longer lasting calligraphic well tip. Brilliant! This product is specific to woodburning and heats to 950 degrees. Encaustics have low melt and should not be over 150 degrees. This product is dangerous and burns holes in your work. It is NOT what wasw advertised as an encaustic pen and I was not only disappointed in the false advertising, but received no help in returning it or getting my m oney back. Color me one unhappy artist customer.

Even with a regulator on the lowest setting, the heat from the tool causes the wax to smoke. Nice construction and tips, though.
