Looking through the previous reviews, they seem to range from Love it, to Hate it! Most of those that dislike it, seem to have been surprised by its size.

First thing I would say to anyone thinking of getting a new Die cutting machine, is do your research. Have a look on the Sizzix website, and get the details for the machine. It is big, and it is heavy. You will NOT want to be moving this beast around. It weighs around 40lbs, and its footprint is almost 26" long by 23" wide, including the handle. IF you have a place you can set it up and leave it, then this machine has to be the way to go. Its a once & forever upgrade, which is why I bought one. I was fed up with dies/folders etc getting bigger than my current machine would take. I figure that with a 12 1/2" opening,(the 13" opening quote is not correct!)and a 14" long by 12" wide cutting area, I will never want anything bigger. Despite what one or two people say, this machine WILL cut every die on the market, from wafer thin ones to the supersized ones.I have used the old Red,Yellow & Green Sizzix steel rule dies,Quickutz dies,Tim Holtz dies(including the long Strip dies),Cuttlebug/generic embossing folders, Fiskars Texture Plates, Memory Box, Cheery Lyn,PTI,Nestabilities as well as Brass Embossing stencils. You just have to try out different plate/shim combos for the Non Sizzix stuff.

What you should do, is look around for the BIG SHOT PRO Kit, which comes with the BSP AND all the plates necessary for whatever you may want to use it for. It is easy to operate, and its weight & footprint help to make it so easythere is no way this machine will move or slide around in use.The plates all have info on them as to which you need for different dies and folders. You can also cut or emboss a number of dies or folders at the same time, as long as they are all the same type. For instance, I can emboss 4 regular cuttlebug type folders at once, or cut 4 Tim Holtz Strip dies.It is sturdy and seems well built. Personally, I can't fault it. It is exactly what I wanted, and what I expected. Beneath the carrier tray there is storage spaceI keep a notebook for 'sandwich' recipes there, along with other odds & ends. This is one purchase I have no regrets about, but as I said, look for The Big Shot Pro kit, rather than just the BSP on its own. The kit is a little dearer, but cheaper than buying them all separately.

I purchased this machine from Joanns more than 16 months ago when it first came out but I see the price has not changed much. I really like this machine for ease of use and the fact that I can use 12" paper but the killer is that an appropriately sized multipurpose platform was never included with this very expensive machine. I called Sizzix when I first purchased the machine and they assured me that they would be releasing a multipurpose platform for the Big Shot Pro but they took a long time to do so.

It appears the Sizzix Big Shot Pro Accessory Solo Platform, Shim & Wafer Thin Die Adapter UPC841182060457 Dimension 14 1/4" x 12 1/4" x 5/8" is now available at $35+ for this machine. Until I buy this accessory I am using the multipurpose platform from my smaller Sizzix 655268 Big Shot Cutting-and-Embossing Roller-Style Machine. It does mean however that I can't use the larger wafer-thin dies until I get the accessory.

This machine is very heavy and has a large footprint but if you have the room for it, is a worth-while purchase because it cuts quietly and as smooth as butter. I'm sticking to this machine and my Cricut Expression because they can both handle 12" paper.

The fact that the center roller is covered with a plastic casing makes this machine very easy to use. The casing gives you something to hold on to while you crank the handle which takes a lot of the pressure off of your shoulder while you use the hand crank. I only had one problem with this the scoreboard dies either do not make a clear enough impression for the score marks to show up on paper or it cuts right through the score marks. However, this problem could be more related to the die rather than the machine. I think some of the newer scoreboard dies assume you are using chipboard whereas the older ones assumed you were using paper (just eyeballing the dies, it looks like the blade depth might vary for the score lines). It does indeed take more more space than the big shot but if you really love the bigger dies, this is a very affordable option compared to the Accu-Cut machine. I've tried both and I actually find this one to be much much easier to use.

I quilt! Having admitted my addiction, I can now say that Sizzix is my enabler! They make it so easy to cut large numbers of odd cuts (stars, hearts, bottles, etc) of fabric in a short amount of time, that applique quilts and quilts with odds shapes are so fast! And I don't have sore hands & wrists from cutting them out 1 at a time with scissors! Their dies & accessories are so reasonable that I can't understand why anyone would want any other brand. It also uses other brands dies! Now try beating that one! I checked out reviews on other brands & this brand & this brand beat all the others. Now I know why. For my use the Big Shot was perfect: portable, large enough for my quilting pieces, easy to store, has a large plate, uses other brands dies, reasonable prices on EVERYTHING, and a variety you can't find anywhere else. I'd be in an ad for this product in a NY second! I can only guess that if it works this well on my cloth, it will work on paper goods equally well.

I happen to have ordered my own die set at the same time as this Big Shot because I had a feeling none came with the machine....and I was right! For those who want to give this as a gift you should order some die cuts to go with it so the person you give it to wont be disappointed. You'd think the manufacturer would as least give us one stinking die to use so we could try it out right away. Sheeesh!!!

I do love this machine, though. I use it to cut felt and it does a nice job. Better on real wool felt, it cuts like butter but the acrylic you need to have card stock paper under it. And if the felt is really thin, you need two pc. of card stock. Someone else mentioned this as well in their review on a die cut set. Just a pointer for those who want to cut more than paper with it....it will do it!!! Just remember to buy your own die set! :)
