I used these files to craft string grooves for my mandolin, on both the bridge and the nut. If you're thinking about using these for a similar purpose and you've got an extra $30, I'd suggest also picking up a couple of the smaller guitar-specific files from Stewmac.com. It's not critical, because you can get by fine with these for a fraction of Stewmac prices, but if you're a "serious" luthier then you'll probably find all sorts of flaws with these files and hate them and claim they're a ripoff or something. But for my non-professional instrument-repair purposes, they worked fine for what I needed them for, and they shall remain a fixture in my stringed-instrument-toolbox(if you play guitar/bass/etc, you'd better have one too!).
