The best watercolors are usually ones that are water soluble when dry, and can be easily mixed together to create all the colors of the rainbow, (or mixed with white paint to create more opaque, non-transparent shades). These paints usually come in small bottles.
This set is pre-mixed so it saves you the time of having to mix colors with water to create the shades. However because of this, you won't be able to get that wide spectrum of colors as you would in the bottled ones. Of-course you can mix two colors together to get a new color but the results are still not quite the same as the bottled ones.
This set, however is far superior in quality when compared to other pre-mixed tray sets such as Crayola, Faber-Castell or Melissa and Doug. Lyra's colors are vivid and brilliant and the brush provided carries the colors well. Lyra's colors do mix well (the plastic case (which can be removed), provides an area for mixing) and the paints do not become a muddy mess or hard and brittle. A tube of white paint is also included in the set. Lyra's watercolors also work beautifully with oil pastels and do not stick to the colors but enhances it. Another positive is that Lyra's watercolors are AP certified non-toxic.
Overall Lyra's watercolor paints are far superior in color and quality when compared to other tray sets and are very highly recommended!

These paints are fabulous. You can pop out the colors you want to work with. This keeps the storage box clean. I'm a neat freak. I can't stand paint boxes that are messy because I tried to wipe them out after I used them. They are also wonderful paints. The paint brush that comes with them works well, and I love the little tub of opaque white that come with them. They are made in Germany which says something about the quality. The price is great, and I would highly recommend them to anyone who is new art student or anyone like myself who likes to make watercolor gift cards.
