....because they are very very hard. Soft oil pastel sets are revered because they blend so well. But sometimes you need a hard pastel/opaque to correct mistakes; to over-write a mistake. Also, if you lay down a base layer of these, because they are so hard, you can scratch the softer pastel layers above them off and start over. The white stick alone is worth the cost of the set. Why? Because the white is so hard/opaque as to push the softer colors out of the way. For instance: Try creating blue water and waves with white-caps with a soft set of oil pastels. With these you can use white to go right over dark no problem. Oil pastels are hard to use because you have to leave the white part of the paper exposed to create highlights. Not with these. You can use the white stick right over dark similar to oil paints...and the white will be bright white!
When my wife first bought these and I tried them and thought, "These are junk because they are so hard and don't blend well", BUT then I was having trouble putting white-caps on top of waves in a water scene when I discovered the white stick solved my problem beautifully! I was smiling from ear to ear. You really do need a variety of hardnesses of oil pastels sets. I recommend these as a "supplemental" set rather than as a stand alone set. Don't hesitate to order these pastels they are very nice!! Bought them so my niece and I could be creative together. Will buy them again when we use these ones up.

It may just be that oil pastels aren't my cup of tea, because before buying this set I had never used them before and unless more expensive sets are a whole lot better than this, I have no interest in using this medium again. From what I have read on the subject, a quality set of oil pastels will have more of a lipstick consistency. These however, are definitely more like a crayon. I would have given them two stars, but I believe they were only $10 at the time I purchased them and I don't want to harshly rate something that I don't know a great deal about.

I usually prefer soft pastels, so this purchase was for experimental purposes. I already owned a few of the more expensive sticks. These are large and easier to grip than some of the other brands, but not as creamy. Periodic dipping in mineral spirits solves this. Good for beginners.
