I was gifted a set a few years back and I have to say these pencils are amazing... I lost them in a move and it honestly took a while to adjust to going back to ordinary pencils. They go on beautifully, and it doesn't take much in order for it to go on dark. Not to mention, if you make a mistake, it actually erases better than an ordinary pencil (even when you do darken the lines, or if you use an eraser other than the one it comes with... though the paper you are using still is an important factor when it comes to this.) Not only that, but the case is appealing and compact... unlike some other pencil sets I've seen, so it's convenient for travel being that it's easy to slide into a backpack/knapsack with out taking much space, leaving more room for other art supplies (or possibly school books. :P)
The only complaints I have, are that; the extender was just a little bit larger than the pencils, how ever that could have also just been the one that came with my set, and the plastic lining is a little bit fragile One of my pencils stabbed through it... and that also could have been from being in my bag, which was tossed around a lot in highschool. Seeing as they both have ways to explain why those things occurred, those still don't outweigh the pros to owning this... there isn't an honest reason as to why you shouldn't order this!
Overall, it's worth the price and make a great gift for a friend/family member who loves drawing, or even just for yourself. I ordered mine yesterday, and I can't wait until I receive them!

I love arting. I don't know much about the technicalities of it but I sure do love producing it. I am not even really sure how good I am. I do know that I read many reviews about these and thought "they are just pencils?" Then I ordered them and tried them. I don't know exactly what it is about them, perhaps the extra weight I perceive as balance in my hand, or the smooth lacquer finish that almost feels like I am holding a fine art brush or even the way the graphite just eases off and glides onto the paper as if I am painting a stroke of a drawing but these things are magnificent. When I have them in hand it makes me want to draw. Even if I have nothing on my mind I just have to do something.I didn't know what the purple one was so I had to look it up. I will save you the trouble in case you don't know. You can apparently use it just as you would all the others but then you can go back over it with a wet brush to give the finished look that of a watercolor. The included one is plain black graphite in color but they evidently make a line of all different colors you can purchase. I thought it was neat.
I am not sure how to use the holder. I imagine though that it is used when they get too small to hold with ones hand. When I first opened the kit I tried to jam the full pencil into the holder and thought it looked silly, so that is how I came to that conclusion.
I was a bit puzzled by the cap as well. it fits rather loosely over the pencils. To me, it almost seems as if the way they are sharpened from the factory makes the bevel rather long so the point hits the tip of the cap before the edge has a chance to grip the shaft and hold on. If one were to use a different sharpener and shorten the bevel I imagine it would fix this, or I am just missing something.
The sharpener is of good quality. I have many sharpeners, some I have paid a bit for that perform crappy and some that I have paid pennies for that perform admirably. This sharpener falls under the category of cheap and good. I use it first to sharpen these then use another sharpener to put a fine point on without wasting much graphite.
The kneaded eraser is a kneaded eraser. It was larger than some that I have bought individually but by no means is it huge. I did find it to be of quite a decent quality though.
I imagine that many of my epiphanies about this set are pretty common knowledge to most artists, but if you are just a good drawer looking for something other than a pencil than this may not be so common so i offer it here.
My bottom line is that when I run these out I will buy more and continue to do so until I stop drawing.

Bought this set at a Hobby store about ten years ago to supplement my sketching set for my oil painting ideas. Fell in love with pencil drawing all over again, I did. I quit oil painting and now all I do are pencil illustrations with this set. I often use a few prismacolor pencils for layouts, but otherwise this set is perfect. Buy it. You won't regret it!Honest reviews on Cretacolor Monolith Box- Woodless Graphite Pencil Drawing Set
Every artist needs a muse and mine is nature. I have a small sketchbook to take with me so I can pull it out whenever I need to. Instead of digging into my purse trying to find a pencil, I thought a set would come in handy.PROS:
-I love the weight of these pencils. They feel really good in my hand.
-I love that I can take these with me where ever I need to go. It is very convenient as it comes with everything I need. Pencils, sharpened, and eraser.
-Different consistencies so I can go from dark to light as I wish.
-Excellent for shading.
CONS:
-It is very difficult to get a clean, crisp line from these pencils. They shed too much. That's why they are great for shading but when I just need a simple, clean line, it's almost impossible to get it. If the material were packed together a little tighter, there wouldn't be a problem.
-The lightest shade isn't as light as I would have liked.
-I personally don't use this set for very important pieces. I use these for everyday scribbles that I make in my sketchbook. I only use these in important pieces for shading and very carefully!
I am still searching for a set that I can use for more important pieces than everyday scribbles. If anyone has any suggestions, let me know! I need something that makes clean, lines but still good quality.
