The focus of this set is on luxury and devotion to the art of watercolor. Every element represents the top craftsmanship of Winsor and Newton, and its long history of quality and innovation.
If you're looking for a set for learning basic skills, you will be happier with less expensive W&N Cotman sets. If you're an experienced watercolorist who needs ongoing supplies of the highest quality, you can find many W&N artist-grade watercolor sets that are both more affordable and more practical. Though useful, there is nothing utilitarian about this particular set. Clearly, it is not intended for mainstream artists.
So who is this set intended for? It's for someone who has enough experience to know the value of Winsor and Newton's top-grade paints, who loves beautiful and historically-resonant presentation, and who is interested in art tools that are in themselves works of exquisite craftsmanship.
You don't need this, but if you can afford it it's certainly a beautiful set to aspire to.

I received this item as a gift. It is a very compact box of paints, but it is not worth $225 plus $20 shipping and handling. The box isn't practical for most painters. There is no spot for paper, water, etc., so you need to carry these items separately. I have a large canvas painting bag that is far more practical. I store my paints in clear plastic containers so they are protected by easy to see, and still have plenty of room for brushes, paper, water container, rags, etc.
I am returning the box and discovered that there is a 15% restocking fee. So the item will cost us the $20 s/h, plus the 15% restocking fee of $33.75 plus the return shipping cost (probably $15) for a grand total of $68.75. I feel awful that the sender of the gift will be out $68.75 with nothing to show for it but the lovely thought, but unfortunately I already own all of the items in the box and keeping it would be a waste as well. Buy your supplies separately and carry them in inexpensive plastic containers. You'll be glad you did.
