This little oscillating steam engine and boiler combination may seem a bit pricey. The parts are basically stock materials but they are machined precisely and assemble without trouble. Only simple hand tools are required. The boiler requires soldering with a torch. The instructions are complete and throrough.

The boiler uses Sterno for fuel, heats quickly, and is relatively reliable.

While not as pretty as some, it may be just the ticket for someone without access to a machine shop and a tenth the price. I have had mine for 11 years.

I love this model steam engine I am not using it for a marine engine but rather for a stationary engine to drive some toy steam accessories I had to modify the flywheel but its working okay. It would be nice in a ship or boat model but I am not a good wood craftsman.

This would have been a fun model if the parts would have been made right.I CALLED MIDWEST PRODUCTS THEY ASKED FOR PICTURES OF THE BAD PART WITCH I ALREADY HAD PAINTED AND HAD PART OF IT PUT TOGETHER.THEY HAD DRILLED THE HOLES ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE MAINFRAME.THEN THEY WANTED IT SENT TO THEM.AFTER THEY GOT IT THEY CALLED AND TOLD ME THEY DON'T KNOW WHEN THEY WILL HAVE ANY NEW ONE DONE.

Got this kit for a birthday present. I loved every minute of putting it together. As others have said, the copper on the boiler is very easily scratched and dented. My kit was also missing the alcohol/sterno burner like several other reviewers. This is the only reason I only gave it 4 stars. I just made my own alcohol burner and it worked great. You do need to know how and have the materials to solder the copper and bronze fittings. Or just figure out how to do it along the way. For me it is all part of the fun. You will also need either a buffer wheel, or progressive sheets of fine sand paper to get the metal to a nice shine. All and all, this is a worthwhile and fun kit if you are willing to do a bit of work.
