So, I have never used a sewing machine in my life, HOWEVER, my daughter has been trying to sew all sorts of things by hand. Since I have no idea how to teach her to sew, and classes aren't really available within a reasonable driving distance, I decided it was time for a machine for her 8th birthday. This machine is unbelievable! The manual makes everything seem so easy, from loading the bobbin, to changing out and using the various different feet. Our first project was a denim handbag, made from the bottom of a pair of old jeans. We even made the button hole for a cute little button to keep it closed! I can't seem to stop thinking about all of the possible projects that we are going to be undertaking during this hot summer break!
I can't compare this to other machines, of course. But I can definitely say that if you're a newbie and looking for something high-quality but not difficult to handle, this is it.

Prior to purchasing the CP-6500 I had never used a sewing machine and this was a great machine to learn on. The instruction manual is very clear and the machine itself is amazing with so many stocking options. The auto bobbin winder and feeder are great functions. If you are new to sewing and do not want to spend a lot of money on a machine that may be to complicated this is the machine to get plenty of bells and whistles but not overwhelming.Best Deals for Brother CP-6500 Computerized Sewing Machine
I cannot believe how much I love this maching. I have been using the same Singer machine for over 40 years and finally decided on an upgrade. I read a lot of reviews on this machine and it sounded perfect for me. It is so easy to get started on and very quiet. The machine is very light weight also. I have not utilized many of the extra features as the type of sewing I am doing at this time is very basic. As soon as I have time, I plan to experiment with the various stitches and attachments. So far it has operated extremely well and I plan to pick up sewing as a hobby once more.Honest reviews on Brother CP-6500 Computerized Sewing Machine
I like this machine. It's easy to use and very fast. Unfortunately, like with all newer Brother machines, it just isn't made to last like the machines of yesteryear..I've had 2 other brother computerized machines and they usually work well for about a year, then the problems begin. After my 2nd went to poo, I purchased a Singer Heavy duty machine, which started having all kinds of problems within a few weeks. So I went back to Brother, but not totally satisfied.. Today's machines are built so cheaply, it's just unfortunate that a customer can't buy a certain brand knowing it will last for years.. Nothing lasts for years anymore... It's a sad situation!!I have a Brother machine from 1954 that is more dependable than these newer machines.. The problem with the older machines is that they don't do any fancy stitching and can't sew on many of todays fabrics, like knits. But the point is, they used to make Brother machines to last!! Modern sewing machines are not built to last. Sad but true.
Having said that, though, if you're looking for a machine that does a lot and you don't intend to use it on a daily basis, then this kind of machine will work well for you. If you plan to use it daily for hours at a time, it probably won't last more than a couple of years before it starts having issues..
I've realized a couple of things about these machines that really help keep it running good, which is why I'm updating my feedback.. They really need to be cleaned under the needle plate/bobbin cartridge a lot.. If you sew a lot, then you'll need to clean them probably once a week. The needle needs to be changed frequently.. I think this may be a today's needle situation.. They, too, are not built to last like the needles of yesteryear.. They get dull quickly and really effect the way the machine sews..
I'd also like to add something I've discovered in the last month. I've updated to a Bernina sewing machine... There are a LOT of the same features on the computerized Brother that are found on a Bernina.. The brother is not built as well, but Brother has obviously incorporated a lot of the features that sell a Bernina machine. I never would have realized that if I hadn't purchased a Bernina.. For that, I'm impressed with what Brother is incorporating into a machine that cost much less than a Bernina..
