I am a very active plein aire watercolorist. I own and use more than a dozen small, half-pan watercolor boxes, about a half dozen from Winsor & Newton. To my mind this model, the mini PLUS is a brilliant design, in honesty, rivaling Winsor & Newton's legendary but much more expensive "Bijou Box". It contains about the practical minimum number of hues in an easily used package. Just brilliant! Although plastic, the box is quite sturdy. Despite holding the Cotman or student grade line of paints, I've found it still wonderful to use. (The difference between my not-so-good efforts and the accidental good ones is not student ("Cotman") versus professional ("Artist's") Winsor & Newton paints.) I can strongly recommend this unit for the serious traveler or plein aire watercolorist traveling light. What I cannot recommend or understand is either the "toy" category or the list price. At another site I paid half this and received it in two days, ordinary shipping.

In short: NOT a toy. Children make hopeless messes of cake / pan kits, mixing and thus ruining the colors at the source. (I teach children with tube colors.)

Too expensive (list price) at this particular vendor.

As typical for this genre, the included brush is unsatisfactory. Too small. You'll need to augment this with a good, larger travel brush.

However, otherwise a just outstanding product for an adult watercolorist wanting a sturdy and compact travel outfit. Were it not framed here as a list-priced toy, I'd have given it a good 4.5 stars.

This little kit is about the size of a cell phone and is very easy to use as a travel palette. The paints are good and can be replaced by artist-grade paints of the same or other colors (purchased separately), if desired.

I agree with the reviewer who wrote that one might not want any fewer colors in the kit to work with, but this product works really well as a travel palette. It also has a reasonable amount of mixing area, especially considering the size of the product. I use a waterbrush with this kit instead of the delivered brush (which is too tiny to be practical for my needs).

A worthwhile purchase.
