I bought this kit for our annual tie dye party that we have on Labor Day weekend every year. This dye kit doesn't come with the ash rinse like other kits that I have gotten, but works just as well without it. Just prewash your white shirts, and go for it. We got 12 shirts dyed with this kit, but they needed extra rubber bands for everyone to dye shirts at the same time. I would recommend getting your shirts damp before dying them, otherwise the dyes run like off of a ducks back. It had a harder time soaking into the material, but when you dampen them first, it soaked right into them. About six hours later, we just rinsed them in the kitchen sink with running cold water, and rung them out. They were them washed in cold water in the washing machine. How cool they turned out. My kids wore their newly dyed shirts to school the very next day! We got this kit and another kit that claimed to dye 8 shirts, and all together we only dyed maybe 16 shirts. You can never dye the amout the box intends, because most people put a lot of dyes on their shirts. This kit alone only dyed about 12 shirts, not 20 like the box says. It sure was a fun family day that we recommend for all ages above three years old. Kids need adult supervision, but they can do it themselves and love what the shirt looks like when they get it done.

I was very pleased with this kit. We bought the kit for my sons 7th birthday and the kids loved making the shirts. We all made spiral shirts and I was concerned about the lack of perfection with the twisting of the shirts and the haphazard application of the dyes, but they all came out great. I would recommend this as an outdoor activity or have cleaning products nearby to clean up any stains promptly. The kit states 20 shirts could be made, but it was more like 12 youth mediums. Still the shirts look great.

My family (and neighborhood children) used Tulip one-step tie-dye kits last summer. I found that to get vibrant colors that last I had to soak the shirts in a soda ash solution for 10-30 minutes, squeeze out the excess water, then use the product as directed. I then rolled each shirt in a plastic bag, let sit in my basement overnight, and rinsed/washed the next day (this may be in the standard directions). The shirts have been through the wash many times in the last 6 months and haven't faded.

This an easy-to use product, the little bottles give you a great deal more control than the vats of dye we used when I was a kid! The colors available through Tulip are bright and remain brilliant as long as you follow the instructions. You can refill the bottles half-way through use(although, admitedly this will dilute the color a bit) to make the dye last longer. If you want to dye large areas it is best to use the wet dye method (apply to wet fabric) in order to have the dye bleed and spread through the fabric rapidly. If you want more control, apply the dye to dry fabric using the bottle tips. The only real problem was that the gloves provided are NOT adequate to protect your skin. I had resigned myself to having smurf-blue hands when I found a fabulous solution...MR. Clean Magic Eraser! Just add a little water and scrub, the dye comes off quickly and easily. Now that we have found such an easy solution, I think we will let the kids do this much more often. They love the creative aspect of it and I love that we can reuse old shirts that had gotten boring...just add color!
