Golden, an American company that specializes in acrylic paints, is known as one of the best brands to use for professional painting with acrylics. This set is a good value and contains six 22 ml tubes of Hansa Yellow Opaque, Pyrrole Red, Quinacridone Magenta, Phthalo Blue G.S., Phthalo Green B.S., Titanium White. One can save considerably by starting with this set.

Golden Heavy Body has been an industry standard, but now a new line has been introduced: "Open" paints -so called because they stay open (workable and not dry) longer. One of the potential drawbacks of painting with acrylics is that their fast drying time makes it hard to blend colors over time or paint out doors (plein air painting). The Open line of paints by Golden solves this problem by dramatically extending the drying time of the acrylic paints. Even when the paint dries, one can add a bit of water, thinner, or more Open paint to rework the paint and loosen it for further painting.

Many painters have reported that painting with Golden Open acrylics allow them to paint more in the style of oil paints rather than acrylics. Personally, I find these paints a joy to work with. They are very smooth and workable, and the fact that they stay wet for so long allows for an easier, more relaxed approach to acrylic painting, and also makes brush and palette cleaning much, much easier. Although the Golden Open line is somewhat smaller than the Heavy Body line, Open paints can be mixed with other Golden acrylic paints and mediums, with a corresponding speeding up of drying time. This makes these paints very versatile.

The only possible drawback is that the paints do stay wet and workable for a long time. Golden recommends waiting 30 (!!) days before varnishing. So far, I haven't run into any problems regarding this, but it depends on your taste and practice.

I'm very happy with this line, and will continue using them.

Best acrylic paint you can find! Though these are acrylics they apply like oil. They have a crazy long drying time, somewhere in between four to eight hours. They are smooth and rich. It depends on the type of paintings you do but for landscape stuff this is the perfect paint. They are small and sadly they will go semi quick, but remember you can mix them with water or a medium to help extend their life.

I had to take painting to finish my degree and my new school only uses acrylicsand I had previously used oils. I did NOT like the acrylics I started with, dried too fast, wouldn't blend for love or moneybut this is almost like oil! When I read the description of these particular Golden paints I had to try and they were so much betterI like painting now.

Honest reviews on Acrylic Introductory Paint (Set of 6)

The biggest "drawback" to those transitioning from oil to acrylic is the working time. Acrylics dry very quickly and while some (like me!) find this a plus, a traditional oil painter may see this as a negative. So Golden decided to try and solve your problem with the Open line a style of oil like acrylics that stay wet for a very long time even outdoors, so have fun painting in the sun.

The texture is good, they are smooth and feel great to paint with. They are vibrant and absolutely beautiful when they do dry. If you are the type that really likes to take your time, work and re-work sections, this is perfect for you. If you enjoy the spontaneity of traditional acrylics you should probably move on. This kit is the perfect price/quantity to "try it out" if you are unsure or just want to venture into a more leisurely style of painting

As the other review notes, you should wait a minimum of 30 days before varnishing. You *can* varnish earlier, but I personally wouldn't recommend it.

It gets 4 star instead of 5 only because I'm not a fan of this colour selection for someone new to the Open line. A black would have been a very useful addition, as many people do not enjoy mixing black (especially with paint they know little about). The colour selection in the regular heavy body acrylics would have been more preferable: Phthalo Blue (Green Shade), Hansa Yellow Medium, Quinacridone Magenta, Titanium White, Carbon Black, Phthalo Green (Blue Shade)

Normally I paint in oils but I decided to try this new brand of Open acrylics because of the reviews and because it allows you to work with the paint longer than with regular acrylics. I loved the colors! They are bright and intense. However, I found the consistency a bit thick and a little hard to spread with my brush, so I got the Open gel medium to extend the paint and make it more workable. The paint tubes are small, so you'll need an open acrylic medium to extend the paints if you want them to last. I recommend them.
