Review of Royal & Langnickel Soft Pastels Artist Pack, 9-Inch by 12-Inch

I bought this pastel/pad combo because I had never used a soft pastel before and wanted to get a feel for them. I noticed two things right off the bat, the pastels smell really bad and the pad only had 6 pages. I chose a landscape scene as my first subject. For the most part the pastels layed down very easily and smooth. Until I ran into a few of the sticks that were either defective or had dried out after being packaged. I think 9 or 10 of the pastels were fine but 2 or 3 were very hard and did not apply easily to the paper. It was quite annoying and I have not been able to use those colors at all. The paper seems to be of good quality and has consistent surface texture. I have used two sheets so far and it has worked very well for the pastels. I'm giving this product a 3 star rating because of the pastels that were defective. The manufacturer should have adequate quality measures in place to prevent unuseable product from reaching the customer. If they all worked fine as I had anticipated when I bought it I would give it 5 stars and be very satisfied. As far as the intended performance and value of the product I'm very happy with it. It is quite inexpensive when compared to other pastel sets and drawing pads. One other complaint about this product is the colors are not named. You can call them blue, green, orange, etc. but no proper identifcation is given on the package. Having never used pastels before I have no point of reference to judge this product but I think they're a good value for a beginner.

I ordered two different pastel kits, these went on smooth they and were are easy to blend. I'm not an artist, so I don't know what's good or bad, but I liked these the best. As far as the paper goes, I'm sure you get what you pay for.
