I gave these to my toddler as a less messy way to paint but she was very frustrated with the results. I tried them myself and I see why. I'm not sure if it takes a lot of water or just time for the water to react but either way, it took awhile to get the color to start smearing/blending like paint. Even then, unless you go to great lengths to color without streaks (perfectly uniform), you will still have pencil lines in your picture unlike the picture on the box. I have used another brand in the past with no problem so I was expecting a better result. It still blends eventually albeit unevenly and you can get a look similar to floating in tole painting if that means anything to you but it really doesn't look that good so I don't know what the point of using them would be. Maybe they worked better for someone else.

I got these just to play, and now I'm addicted and will be upgrading to a higher quality set as I learn more and wear these out. If you are curious about watercolor pencils, this is a good set to buy as it is affordable and isn't a big loss if you decide that this isn't the medium for you. I have found really nice effects with using a wet brush directly on the lead and then rubbing the excess off onto a smooth surface (such as an old CD)...and then painting from that. The great thing is you don't have to add water. They can be very versatile depending on the effects you are wanting.
