There are many excellent colored pencil brands available today, with some of the premier labels being Caran D'Arche (Switzerland), Conté (France), Faber Castell (Germany), Talens (the Netherlands) and Koh-i-noor (Czech Republic). Each pencil brand has its own loyal following, and it is certainly true that the performance characteristics of each leaves a unique "signature" on paper (i.e., the experienced eye can sometimes tell which brand of pencil was used for a different piece of artwork by examining luminosity, reflection, depth of color, and others). I have used all these brands myself, having brought back from Europe entire sets from various manufacturers, and often in different sub types ("artist," "student," and so on). Some also have added touches that really make a pencil set shine, including rounded triangular shafts with subtle inlaid grips, bonded coatings between the lead and the pencil wood to minimize lead shattering, and soft textured surfaces for improved gripping and comfort. Some sets are now even beginning to adhere to the lightfastness specifications as developed by the Colored Pencil Society of America.

So, what should we think about a set of American made colored pencils when they are competing with these premier brands, some of which have been in business for centuries? The answer might be surprising to hear: after using all these brands for an extended period of time, I can say that these Prismacolor "Premier" pencils easily hold their own against the world's best colored pencils.

What are the characteristics of the Prismacolor "Premier" pencils that make them so good?

1. Smooth, silky, and rich laydown of color

2. Little smearing, even when laying down dense patches of color

3. Ability to blend colors as needed

4. Wide range of available colors

5. Relatively inexpensive (by comparison to other premium brands)

6. Availability of the Prismacolor "Verithin" pencil sets, which duplicate the colors of the "Premier" line pencil by pencil (matched by color codes), but in an extremely hard lead that permits a high level of sharpening for detail work which will not quickly wear down.

At first glance, it might seem that these Prisamacolor pencils are expensive, but when one reflects on the fact that some of the more "esoteric" (for lack of a better word) pencils can run upwards of $3 $4 per pencil, the Prismacolors are nothing short of a bargain. (If you hunt long enough, you can even find the large set of 120 pencils that comes in a two tiered wood case with lining to house your collection and you'll still be paying far less per pencil than other high end brands.)

But the proof is certainly in the putting. Get one of these in your hands, and lay down some color on a sheet of paper and see if you don't experience the very thing I am describing here. These are rich and smooth leads with an almost creamy feel. That's not to say you can point them up to a needle: you can, but you just must be careful not to press too much when doing so in order to keep the point from breaking. You can also use these in a duller point to lay down large swaths of rich, deep color. (Again, pairing this set up with the "Verithin" set can be very helpful for detail work.)

Are these pencils perfect? No. There are a few issues, some minor, but nevertheless relevant for this review:

1. Lead shattering seems to be an issue for the company. My first set had no less than 10% of the pencils shattered all the way down to the end, rendering all those colors useless. This is either manufacturing problems, or some improvement in the cases in which the pencils are transported and sold is required to further reduce shock from transport. It is an unacceptable result when purchasing a large pencil set.

2. Along those same lines, it would be wonderful if Prismacolor could look into a similar technology such as Staedler uses in its colored pencils, which is a coating of inner material between the lead and the wood to reduce breakage. I've never had a single Staedler pencil break on me yet. Not one.

3. The triangular shaped shafts of both the Faber Castell and Staedler pencils is in my view a superior design than the round format of the Primscolors, allowing greater control and improved comfort.

4. The Prismacolors do not use any type of friction coating on the outside of the pencils to help improve grip. Both Staedler and Faber Castell do (and in different manners), and this adds immeasurably to their performance characteristics.

5. The printing on the shaft of the Prismacolor to identify color name and code can be almost illegible, with blurry, imprecise lettering. In some lighting conditions, the markings are nearly impossible to read. (The newest editions of the Prismacolors seem to have addressed this, but don't count on getting those in the boxed sets anytime soon until existing stock is sold and replaced with new models.)

6. The Prismacolors are not "finished" on the end with any type of cap or closure, and the pencils also arrive unsharpened. (Compare the Faber Castells, which both come fully sharpened and are mounted in a manner that makes them resistant to any type of breakage during transport; these also, as most other brands, have a nice finishing cap on the end of the pencil.)

Let me be clear. These minor quibbles all fall away once you get one of these in your hand an experience how they perform. These are simply a delight to use, and many artists swear by them. After using them myself, I can see why. I still am extremely impressed with the best of the offerings Europe produces, but these Prismacolor pencils deserve to be counted right among them. If they ever addressed my minor quibbles above, they might vie for a role as a de facto standard with one or two of the other most expensive brands three times their price.

Five stars for performance. Five stars for price. Five stars for fun. And five stars for rich , creamy, deep color!

Note: Although these pencils come in many sizes of sets, I recommend the 72 color set. This gives you a wide range of colors, and does not run you into issues with the larger sets where you have multiple colors so close to one another you cannot easily see the difference. Of course, if you want the beautiful wood case, you'll need to get the 120 set.

I own these pencils and I personally think they are great. I have the 72 color set and I think the creamy leads are excellent because they are soft and free of impurities that cheap colored pencils have. I have not had trouble with blooming or layering so far. I really like the fact that you can reorder specific colors through the Prismacolor website. Be sure to buy an appropriate pencil sharpener. The Prismacolor Colored Pencil sharpener is a good one but you can only sharpen one or two pencils before needing to clean it out. That is the only drawback I have found.

A beautiful way to prevent your prismas from breaking or cracking the lead is to use an Xacto knife to sharpen them and avoid dropping them if at all possible. The lead is very fragile, and a fall may break them. Using a knife is a really gentle way to take care of the lead and prevent the wood around the pencil from wearing down so fast. It will give you about twice as long life for each pencil, because you can shape the wood around the lead instead of shaving the lead off. Granted, a bit of practice is needed, using a crayola pencil is probably the best way to assure your coordination with the knife.

Honest reviews on Prismacolor Premier Soft Core Colored Pencils, 72 Colored Pencils

I'm not sure what happened in recent weeks, but a friend of mine ordered these pencils and received exactly what the product description says is included: 72 pencils, bonus art stix and sharpener. I ordered mine last week and received a smaller tin with the 72 pencils, but no bonus art stix or pencil sharpener (luckily the pencils come sharpened now!). The picture associated with this product shows that I should have received two stix and a sharpener, as does the product description:

"These colored pencils are artists' quality for every level of expertise. Pencils contain high quality pigments for a rich color saturation and feature soft, thick cores which create a smooth color lay-down for superior blending and shading and the thick leads resist breakage. This package contains one 9-3/4 by 8-1/8 by 1-1/8-inch tin with 72 pencils ... and 2 bonus art stix: a woodless colored pencil core for coverage of large areas (art stix colors vary). "

I'm assuming that the product has changed at the factory level (and cutting costs means cutting bonus stuff). THE PRODUCT DESCRIPTION NEEDS TO REFLECT THIS CHANGE. No art stix or sharpener included!

First of all, the guy above who was dissatified, you can't use a reg. pencil sharpener to sharpen Prisma's, becuase what happened to you, will happen. Prismacolor pencils come w/ a special sharpener just for these pencils. Inside the box it explains why you can't use a reg. sharpener on these pencils.

As for my review, I draw tattoos. Every tattoo artist i've ever talked too all use Prismacolor Pencils, and all have rave reviews... I didn't believe them until 1 of the tattoo artists let me try out his set. After i tried his out for a few hours (cuase i was that happy w/ them), i had to have my own set. Once i went Prismacolor, i never went back to the crappy crayolas i was using before. Crayola differs from Prisma becuase most pencils in your store are chalk-based, while prisma's are oil based... They blend like paint..

These are the greatest pencils i've ever seen and used. Though they are expensive, it's well worth it.. It's better to buy a bigger set, like starting out w/ the 48 color set or more.

This set of brushes is a great value. The Cotman brand is said to be student grade, but I found them to be well made, with quality materials. In my opinion, every bit as nice as the more expensive "professional" grade brushes. There is a nice spring in the tips and they shape right up after use. I also like the nice assortment of brush sizes. I purchased these with the Cotman set of 10 tubes of water colors. I highly recommend this set of brushes as well as the Cotman water colors. They are both very high quality.

This is the worst paint-by-number I have ever used. They want you to mix the colors but don't give you enough of the paint to mix all the different shades. Mixing is not the problem, the amount of paint is. Also, the picture shown is not what you get. The colors are not even close. I understand that you are supposed to detail it yourself, but this doesn't even come close! I'm thoroughly disgusted with this and ready to throw it in the trash. I will NEVER buy one of their products again! The cover picture wasn't even painted with the same paints. They are water based paint and not thick enough to cover the numbers on the canvas! If you were to pile it on to cover the numbers, you wouldn't have enough paint to finish half the picture. The paint brush separated from the wooden handle upon first use; and they're supposed to be a BRUSH company. Like I said, you get what you pay for. I painted The Last Supper paint by number (I think it was Dimensions brand) when I was 10 years old. It came with oil paints, it was wonderful, turned out great for a 10 year old. I'm now over 40, so I've tried a lot of different brands. I have three kids, so we've tried several over the years. I have never come across as crappy a paint by number as this one. I would actually have bought a more expensive one, (probably by Dimensions), but the store I was shopping at didn't carry the more expensive brand. Like I said, save your money, because this wasn't even relaxing, I feel like I wasted my time and I haven't even finished half the painting.

My grandmother and two great aunts used this pattern to make a baptism gown for my son out of my wedding dress. It was beautiful and they said that the pattern was easy enough to follow. Both pieces use more fabric than you might imagine, so be sure to read the pattern fabric requirements.

This stuff is great for my card making. I've used it to lightly go over a background for just a hint of shimmer, along the edges of paper roses, and even to completely change the color of a piece of paper to make it fit my purposes. Easy to use (think eye shadow). I don't like the little balls for applying it so use cotton swabs. Using actual eye shadow applicators would be a good tool too.

These tapes are true to their description. The colors look exactly like they do in the picture and they are really cute.

My only comment is that they are very small, I thought that for $18 they would be larger. Also, they vary in size. In the picture it looks like each tape has the same circumference, but that is not quite true.

Some of the colors are wonderful. They are thick, but spreadable, have great color saturation, and lots of sparkle.

Other colors (orange, black, and blue) are SUPER runny and have little, if any, color or sparkle. All three of these colors are primarily the liquid in which the paint and glitter should be suspended. Even shaking them to mix them well doesn't help at all. The colors remain runny without any real color or glitter.

Still other colors (one of the greens and the gold) are so thick that they cannot be spread well at all.

Overall, I am very disappointed in this product. I suppose I will stick with Folk Art Extreme Glitter, which is a FAR superior paint to these Martha Stewart paints.

I love all the Martha Stewart Glitter Paints. I paint on t-shirts and they make the designs really standout. The only problem is, I want more colors now! They hold up well after having been washed. Because I use other acrylic paints, some are used for screen printing that I do with my Yudu Machine, I always heat press them once they are dry. Martha's glitter paints keep their shine. Once in awhile, I might add a little more after heat pressing, to get that extra sparkle. I can't wait to get more colors!

24 Kraft Edger Scissors in Rotating Hardwood Rack Review

24 Kraft Edger Scissors in Rotating Hardwood Rack
Customer Ratings: 4.5 stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program For anyone who likes to decorate and make their own cards, do scrap-booking, or other craft projects, these are a fun set of scissors. The patterns are fun, the scissors are colorful and the spinning wood rack is handsome. Depending on the paper or card stock you are cutting, and the particular pattern of scissors you are using, some of them rip or tear the material slightly if you don't cut carefully. Most of the scissors work very well, but a few don't cut so neatly. They don't seem particularly durable, but being that you have more to choose from, I'm sure this set will provide many years of good use for the artistic person.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program This is a really cool set of scissors! Out of the 24 of them there are 5 that don't cut very well. But the rest of them work pretty good. There's a wide variety of patterns in the set and any scrapbooker will love a set of these. They are really cheaply made and probably wont hold up to heavy use but at about $1.80 a pair they are a real bargain. But with 24 to play with they should last just about anybody a long time. Having odd shaped cutting edges I don't know if they can be sharpened or not. So I think I'll see what I can do with my Tormek tool grinder to touch up the pairs that I have that wont cut very well.

I cant really recommend these for anyone that wants quality tools. Being a retired machinist I have a thing about tools being precise and do what they are supposed to do. But for the price, you get what you pay for. Several pairs of cheap disposable scissors to play with.

Best Deals for 24 Kraft Edger Scissors in Rotating Hardwood Rack

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I am thrilled with this set of craft scissors. Originally I was planning to use them for scrapbooking but now I use them for preschool Sunday School kids. Each scissor in the set has a picture on one outside edge of the pattern it cuts and the other side has the name of the pattern. At first glance, I was concerned that the blades were too far apart to cut anything but heavy paper but it was only a few minutes when I had cut cute patterns into every piece of paper within reach. They are easy to use and cut well but are safe for kids. The wooden rack is a great way to store them and the kids love the brightly colored handles and designs.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program Why would anyone ever need 24 different pairs of edging scissors? The answer is "why not?" This impressive collection contains just about every edging pattern you can imagine, and the scissors are sturdily constructed, able to cut through even heavy cardstock with ease. The "lazy susan" design of the case is a nice touch. It's a great set for the crafter or scrapbooker, and safe enough for kids to use too. It's an ideal collection to share with a crafting group or classroom. I'm not sure why Amazon categorizes it as a "toy", but then again, maybe it is. There's definitely a fun factor here for kids or adults.

I use these for my personal art journal, I'm well over 21 and it is not a toy for me, tho I have lots of fun using them. I like watercolor without the crayon like streaks left behind after water has been applied. Watercolor pencils (even the most expensive) leave streaks or you have to dip the pencil or wet the paper first. I use gesso or matte medium as a base on various art journaling papers from thin to thicker. These EASILY (no hard rubbing in necessary, dry crayon on dry paper) blend completely with no streaks AND are not messy to handle. They are just about as hard as your typical crayola standard crayon. I have used crayola Portfolios and they dissolve wonderfully too, but are so creamy and soft & easily rub off on your hands. The Portfolios only come in 24 colors, whereas the Reeves has 48. Of course, you can buy the ultra top of water soluable crayons, Caran de Ache, but who can afford that perfection? These are a high quality sub, IMHO. I love the variety of colors & their vibrancy. The hardness gives more control & precision and is easy to sharpen. The only drawback was that the magenta color was not blended properly during production. It is like two colors in one crayon and depending on which side of the magenta crayon you use, you will get either pure black or dark pink. Plus, the dark black streak does not dissolve easilyI just dont use this one at all. Luckily, I use the Dark Pink color to replace the magenta and don't miss it. I havent used all of the colors (about half), so I hope there are not more unblended ones. Overall, a great product and I would buy again. I will update if I find more unblended crayons. Otherwise, no future updates means it is all good!

I recently began trying to reacquaint myself with doing art. In particular, mixed media painting. After watching a few YouTube tutorials, I decided to try my hand using water soluble wax pastels. I purchased this Reeves set and have somewhat mixed feelings. First of all, the colors are very rich. I love how they take to the paper. They also blend with each other well if you want to create flesh tones and shading. My only real. Problem with this product is that it does not always apply smoothly. I like to paint portraits but I find that these Reeves tend to apply unevenly in spots. And when you try to correct or fill in the uneven parts, the extra brush strokes tend to lift up what has already been applied, exposing the paper. It takes a lot of work trying to get consistent application with this product and I am still learning. I would still say the richness of the color, combined with the blend ability, outweigh the disadvantages of "smooching" application or washing out the color with wet brush. Good, but not great.
