AMACO Sculptamold Modeling Compound, 3-Pound, White Reviews

I read about this in a book on model railroad construction, but it took me a while to find. Then I suddenly found it in three places ... so I was not looking hard enough at first. It was worth finding. This stuff binds to styrofoam, which is a miracle by itself and it works like plaster and clay the best of both. It goes on easily with a tongue depressor or spatula and is easy to work. I immediately bought three more bags to use for a number of projects. It is also a lot less messy than mixing up a batch of hydrocal or plaster, although I still like using those in other situations. It is perfect for small to medium areas that need coverage, and it adhered hydrocal rocks to styrofoam, which is awesome.

I really like this product and plan to keep a good supply on hand ... for making war-gaming scenery, mountains, hills, rivers, rough terrain, etc. It is easy to use, can be mixed in small batches and is the least messy of a number of options, not to take anything away from the messier stuff. It is the easiest to make exactly what you want ... when plaster cloth or hydrocal might be overkill. And it works brilliantly with those two if you need to patch an area, attach a rock or build an outcropping onto a larger project you might have started with one or both of the other two.

I am a novice at doing scenery for my model train layout and have struggled to find a product that can be used conveniently to mold into shapes that look like rocky terrain. I have played around with plaster of paris and Hydrocal, both of which work nicely for pouring into molds, but kind of ooze all over the place when trying to make rocky terrain. Sculptamold is fantastic stuff! It is much neater to mix with water than the other products and is very easy to apply to the layout with little mess it stays where you put it and doesn't flow somewhere else. It takes more time than the other products to set up so it is more forgiving in that regard. The terrain that I have made looks much more realistic than I was able to achieve with the other products. It is fun to work with and I will be looking for other new ways to use it for my train layout.

Okay when I read the reviews on here, I got excited. Could it be that I had found a product better than DAS clay? And at a better price? NOT TO BE. This Amaco 'Sculptamold' is NOT 'clay-like' as one reviewer put it 'like clay and plaster-the best of both worlds'...the description reads as if this product is similar to Aves Apoxie Sculpt. You mix it, and depending on the amounts of powder to water, you can get a 'plaster' or a 'clay'. What you get no matter what is SLOP. And don't even try sculpting with it as it sets-I thought this may be possible given it's mushy consistency when first mixed-but what happens is it breaks off in small chunks. This product is ONLY good for plaster casts or 'molds'--and I don't even see it being good at THAT. For a pro sculptor who needs to create detail, this WILL NOT WORK. If you create childish lumpy projects-this may be for you. But you'll have a heck of a time getting it to work-and forget using it on an armature!!! As soon as I saw the product in the bag, I knew I was in trouble. It's not even a powder--but a dusty, recycled paper type of thing. I nearly RUINED a project I'm doing for someone. Well, that's what I get for trying to cut corners. I'm sticking to DAS clay-and the even better (albeit more expensive) Aves Apoxie Sculpt. I would have given this ZERO stars if possible-but I could not rate lower than 1 star. I'm asking Amazon for a refund...

This stuff was not what I expected. I was hoping for something more like cellu-clay, which I use at work with kids in art projects. This product has plaster in it and is hard to clean up, lumpy when dry. Not a fan.

This is a great paint for projects. The only issue is that its not really a light pink so much as a pepto pink. I needed it as a base coat for a more expensive paint and it worked fabulously for that. Decent price (if like me you don't have a car/access to Hobby Lobby).

Buy Glow Inc. Glow in the Dark Sample Kit

THIS STUFF IS INCREDIBLE!!!!! When they say it's the brightest glow-in-the-dark paint on the planet, they MEAN it! (OK, so I once found some slightly brighter stuff on Saturn, but it was way radioactive, and took forever to dry.)

The texture is akin to slightly grainy gouache (opaque watercolor paint), and can be thinned if you want to have a more translucent quality. Please note that they also sell more transparent versions for creating cloudy effects, like the Milky Way. I strongly recommend going to a hardware store and springing for one of those tube-shaped blacklight fixtures and bulbs (total cost usually about $24 for the 12-inch set) to get the most out of your paints if you're going to go into wall painting (because c'mon, don't most of us buy this stuff to do starfields on the ceiling? Admit it).

The colors are AMAZING, and definitely show up best when charged up either under direct sunlight or the aformentioned blacklighting. This particular sample pack includes: White, which isn't particularly bright but is a true white, though ONLY when fully charged (otherwise looks like a sort of wimpy greyish-blue); Green, the typical glow-in-the-dark yellowish-green, except strong enough to read by (I kid you not); Ultra Blue, which is a lovely color, also very bright, and actually closer to teal than blue (really lovely; did I mention that?); Pure Blue, a true, fairly deep blue, not quite cobalt but definitely pleasing; and the incomparable Purple, which is an intense deep blue-violet and looks, in fact, just like the picture. Like white, it hasn't as long a glow life as Green and Ultra Blue (and to a lesser extent Pure Blue), but while it shines, you won't be able to take your eyes off it.

Interesting sidenote for physics nerds: all these colors respond to sunlight and blacklight, BUT the purple paint does NOT respond to incandescent or LED light. It DOES respond to fluorescent light, however. Discussion? (And before you ask, why yes, I am unemployed right now. How did you know?)

If your only previous experience with glow in the dark paint is the stuff that is sold for Halloween and at crafts stores, you will be surprised by how intensely these paints glow. The least intense (purple) paint is stronger and longer lasting than the zinc-based craft store paints. The V10 and Ultra Blue colors will glow bright enough to cast shadows if applied to a large enough surface. This is a superior product.

These paints are white when wet, but they dry to a near-transparent finish with a slight sheen. The glow pigment is granular, so the paint doesn't flow as well as a typical acrylic. I got the best results using natural bristle artists' brushes. Three coats will produce a bright, uniform glow effect.

Smooth plastic and metal should be primed before painting with glow paint, otherwise it won't adhere well. The acrylic base adheres very well to painted surfaces such as walls, and it is quite resistant to chipping. If the wall is painted with a gloss or semi-gloss paint you might not be able to see the glow paint in daylight, but if the wall is a flat or eggshell surface the glow paint will show up as a slightly glossy area when viewed at an angle.

The sample pack was my first purchase. Playing around with it answered my questions and fired my creativity. I put the bottles on a low speed rock tumbler under a light for a day to get them fully charged before painting. I like that it is a thick consistency and is easily thinned with water. I paint at night, flick the light on, paint a dab or two, light off to inspect. At the end of my first night, I happened to leave the light off as I cleaned my brushes in the (flat bottomed) sink. You should do this. It makes a galaxy explode out. If you know someone with a jungle or forest wall graphic, put some eyes on it.

With my eyesight deteriorating more than I ever thought it would, this headset has been awesome. I may look like a dork wearing it, but I am a dork who can completely see everything I am doing, and doing so with sufficient lighting. I don't know how this headset compares to higher-priced ones because this is the first and only I have owned, but once I figured out some of the parts/features, I realized how smart of a purchase this was.

At first, I was a little upset when the headset kept falling on the bridge of my nose and it hurt. Then I realized if I tightened the silver knobs on the sides, the headset no longer fell on my nose. Imagine that?!

Same thing with the loupe magnifier -it kept falling in front of my sight even when I didn't want it to. I only had to tighten the screw to fix this problem.

Now, if I really read the description thoroughly, I would have remembered that it said that it had an adjustable light and magnification. I owned the headset over a month before I realized this.

I wanted a magnifier that didn't take up table space and that didn't require me to hold in my hand. It never entered my mind to consider a headset but it was the best decision for me once I did some research. I use my headset to work on my laptop and jewelry when I have to take them apart or read the small print. I also use this for sewing/threading my needle, which is one of the reasons why I plan to purchase one for my mom.

Since my eyesight is just poor, period, I have also used the headset when working on my nails and searching for ticks on my dogs. I would rather grab for the headset than my handheld magnifier since the headset provides additional lighting which I do not always realize I need until afterwards. Also, the headset keeps both my hands free.

This is great for anyone working with tiny items, someone with poor eyesight, or anyone who doesn't want to strain their eyes on tiny items/print and inadequate lighting. I have found my own uses for this product but I am sure there has to be more.

I am a middle aged aircraft mechanic who is beginning to have trouble with my eyesight. I ordered 2 of these, one for home and one for work. The plastic, binocular lenses work great for use at 1/2 arms length. There is a secondary, flip-down binocular lens inside the hood which doubles the magnification and halves the focal length. Turn the round loupe lens into the right eye's line of sight and you have a near microscope! The head band is one hand adjustable to a variety of noggin' sizes. (Almost everyone at the hangar has tried it on.) My only complaint would be that the two knobs one either side which hold the hood in position could be larger and hold better, but if you crank 'em down, they're OK.

I love them,and where I live also impossible to find any thing like this,,,,unless I go out of town, I am catching onto the blending techniques,,,,and they make my cards go from ordinary to full of Dimensions,,I couldn't of asked for faster and greater service,was hesitant at first o order on line,,,but the service I received online and on the telephone was remarkable! This item comes in a very nice case and has great presentation. It is perfect for a "beginning" calligraphy student. My 11 year old son loves his set and was very happy with the items included. If you are looking for something more advanced you would want something with a little finer brushes. I would buy this item again for a child.

I just started getting into the whole Chinese Calligraphy, and I may not have bought this from Amazon, but it was the only box left at a Chinese store in a mall. The brushes are indeed small, but are still good enough to hold, I'm a teenager and I was able to hold these well. The accessories are great to keep, but the bristles on the brushes are not the greatest. The key is to let the brushes dry vertically, and that is why the loops are at the end. It would be great if they had a Brush tree rack or whatnot, but I just use nail filer sticks resting over a counter ^^; Anyway, The Ink stick is REALLY REALLY weak. Very pretty, but again it's more for a beginners. I just used it for the first time tonight and I found it hard to get the ink to get dark. But at least I'm happy that I found a better way to get the accessories I needed.

For people who wanted directions:

The little cup on the right is for water, and there is a little spoon under the ink pad to scoop it out... hint, you need to tilt the cup in order to fill the spoon up.

The little mountain shaped thing is a brush rest, so like if you needed new brush because the bristles are tired (that happens a lot it seems) you rest it there and etc.

The stone and the other container on the left is a stamp that you would find on calligraphy murals with the red. This is your signature. You will need to carve your stone in order to do this correctly. I was told people can do it for you but I'm not sure how much it would cost.

This is a nice set to get started in Chinese calligraphy. While I enjoyed the novelty of grinding the ink, it didn't take long till I purchased a separate bottle of ink to get to painting quicker. I still haven't figured out how I am going to use the little spoon? :)

The product was nice overall, however I felt that it's only good for displaying in a cabinet. I tried to use it but the brushes are too small, and the ink isn't very effective either. If someone really wants to practice calligraphy, they should buy the liquid ink and larger brushes.
